TRANSPORTATIONHighwaysMajor highways serving the New Bern area are U.S. Highways 70 and 17 and N.C. Highway 55. US 70 (four lanes) is the major transportation corridor to the Atlantic Coast and the N.C. State Port facility in Morehead City. US 70 is also recognized as the strategic corridor to Raleigh (112 miles) and to Interstate 95 (80 mi), the nearest intestate exchange.The recent opening of a new span bridge(Sept. 1999) across the Neuse River in Downtown New Bern has made travel much easier. This $130 million project was the largest road project in NC history. RailroadFreight service is provided by Southern Railway. Ten scheduled freight trains operate Monday through Friday, with extra trains operated as needed. Passenger service is not available. AirCraven Regional Airport serves a five-county region. Air service is provided by US Air Express, offering flights to Charlotte and other connecting points and Midway Corporate Airlines with flights to the Raleigh-Durham (RDU) airport and other connecting points. Air freight service is available at the airport from Federal Express, UPS, and Airborne Express. General aviation aircraft are serviced by Air East, Inc. (FBO). Barge & PortNew Bern is located at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, which feed into the Intracoastal Waterway. Barge transport is available on the Neuse River. The nearest state port facility is located in Morehead City (35 mi.) and has a channel depth and port depth of 45 feet. Motor Freight CarriersNew Bern is served by five certified motor freight carriers in eastern North Carolina: Consolidated Freight, Estes, Overnight, Roadway and Southeastern.
